Coach Phil

Phil Wong is an elite level cyclist, bicycle fit specialist, and USA Cycling certified coach.  Phil possesses a wealth of hands on technical experience, thanks to over 15 years of working within the bicycle industry as a mechanic, shop manager and master bike fit technician. Phil has also been racing for 20 years, and possesses nearly 15 years worth of elite level cycling experience.  Shortly after transitioning from mountain bike racing to road racing in 2001, Phil began working with a young coach by the name of Janda Ricci-Munn. Over the course of the next 4 years, Phil and Janda devised structured training plans that would provide him the advantage he needed to make the jump from a fledgling cat 4 road racer to the professional cycling ranks.

After racing full time for 6 full seasons while benefiting from years of mentoring by coach JRM and the many team physicians and specialists he worked with, Phil is now offering his experience and knowledge as a member of Janda’s coaching staff.

In addition to his work as a cycling coach, Phil is still racing at an elite level on the road and cyclocross circuits. This is in addition to operating his newly constructed fit and testing studio in Newburyport, MA.  His comprehensive understanding of all things training and racing related, when coupled with his degree of technical and mechanical experience, provide Phil with a unique and very potent combination of skill sets  as a coach.

Just a couple examples of his coaching related success are as follows:

  • Paul McMahon – After two full seasons Paul is a big hitter on the road as a Cat 3. In 2011 he has had a handful of time trial wins and top 10 road race results. Paul’s top achievement was the becoming the 2011 New England Master’s Time Trial Champ. In 2010 he was 1st overall in The Working Man’s Stage Race – cat 4.  In just his first season of road racing!
  • Dan Ball – Dan has been working with Phil for a full year and has seen great improvements shaving nearly 10 minutes off his Mt. Washington PR and seeing performance breakthroughs the rest of the season.

Coach Phil specializes in the training of beginner to advanced level cyclists and is also available for bike fit, power testing and metabolic testing services.
