Coach Dave

Dave Smith has worked with Janda Ricci-Munn since 2007.  Under Janda’s guidance, Dave has gone from mid pack age group athlete to an elite level age group triathlete/aspiring pro.  Janda considers Dave to be one of the hardest working, most committed athletes he has ever worked with.  Dave’s athletic & coaching experience, educational background and leadership characteristics, when coupled with his easy going demeanor and sincere desire to help athletes succeed, made Janda’s decision to bring him on board as an assistant coach an easy one!

Dave is originally from northern Michigan and has been involved in athletics from the early age of 5.  He has participated in nearly every main stream sport over the years and competed in basketball and track & field at the Division 3 collegiate level. Throughout that time, Dave learned a lot from his own experiences as a student-athlete and from his teachers/coaches along the way.

After college, Dave moved out to Virginia Beach with his wife, Rachel, and dove  into triathlon head first.  Since then, Dave has recorded a number of local, regional, and national level multisport podium finishes.

In 2009, Dave attained USAT All-American status as a triathlete and was subsequently chosen to become a member of the 2010 Zoot Elite Triathlon Team.

In addition to his work as a triathlete and coach, Dave is a middle school Health and Physical Education teacher. He has also served as a high school varsity cross country and track & field coach. His exercise science based formal education provides him with a keen understanding of exercise physiology and human anatomy.  Dave’s formal education, athletic experience and extensive mentoring by “JRM” have provided him with the necessary tools to help athletes of all ages and ability levels realize their multisport goals.

Dave specializes in the training of beginner – advanced level multisport athletes and consults directly with Janda regarding all facets of their training & racing related needs.
